Rush Hour
The stars of this 1998 action comedy, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, are kind of sweet and amusing as reluctant partners working on a kidnap investigation. The victim's father--the Chinese consul, who'd come to the U.S. after the British handover of Hong Kong--calls in a detective from the Royal Hong Kong Police (Chan) to assist the FBI, who've enlisted a loose cannon from the LAPD (Tucker) to keep him out of their hair. The contrast between Tucker's motormouth and Chan's man of few words should be funnier, but the plot--which is cliched without quite becoming self-reflexive--and the uneven pace dampen most of their moments. Directed by Brett Ratner; written by Jim Kouf and Ross LaManna. 98 min. |
