Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Many "minor" Hitchcocks turn out to be intriguing films once you forgive them for not being thrillers. There's Under Capricorn, Rich and Strange, and this 1941 screwball comedy with Robert Montgomery and Carole Lombard. The premise--a happily married couple discover that they are neither married nor happy--has the trapdoor effect of Hitchcock's best plots, dropping the characters into a strange new world. The screenplay is by Norman Krasna, a hack of the lowest degree, but Hitchcock shapes it smoothly to his personal ends. With Gene Raymond and Jack Carson. |
