Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
John Huston exploits but does not explore the rather creepy sexual tension between marine Robert Mitchum and nun Deborah Kerr, marooned together on a Japanese-occupied Pacific island during World War II. In the absence of a real subject, the film leans heavily on a broad strain of Irish humor--whiskey bottles versus rosary beads--that never even worked that well for John Ford and Leo McCarey. In Technicolor and CinemaScope; photographed by Oswald Morris (l957). |
