Deuces Wild
Capsule by J.R. Jones
From the Chicago Reader

Slow-motion shots of swaggering tough guys punctuate this painfully hackneyed gang drama set in late-50s Brooklyn. After their brother dies from a lethal dose of heroin, Stephen Dorff and Brad Renfro form the Deuces to keep their block safe from the drug-dealing Vipers; three years later Renfro falls for a tough cookie (Fairuza Balk) whose brother is a Viper, and the Vipers' ice-cold leader (Norman Reedus) gets out of jail eager to settle a score with Dorff. Writer-producer Paul Kimatian was once a still photographer for Martin Scorsese, who reportedly encouraged him to write this Italian-American soap opera. Given its tired dialogue, predictable situations, and vicious street fighting, Scorsese may wish he'd kept his mouth shut. Scott Kalvert directed; with Matt Dillon, Drea DeMatteo, Vincent Pastore, Frankie Muniz, Balthazar Getty, Max Perlich, and Deborah Harry. 97 min.
