Raoul Walsh's re-creation of New York in the 1890s, drawn (none too literally) from his own childhood memories (1933). It's one of Walsh's most personal films of the early sound period, with definite signs of the stunning deep-focus technique that was to coalesce later in the decade. And it definitely has the Walsh spirit in abundance: this tall tale of rival saloon owners--one of whom (George Raft) is the Steve Brodie of Brooklyn Bridge fame--is broad, rowdy, and a little bit raunchy.
