Billy Liar
Capsule by Dave Kehr
From the Chicago Reader

John Schlesinger had his first big success with this 1963 story of an undertaker's assistant who dreams of becoming a writer. It's all rather fey and cute until Billy is slapped down by the usual Schlesinger nastiness. Tom Courtenay is quite good in the title role, and Julie Christie makes a memorable early appearance (though she wouldn't really emerge until Schlesinger's Darling the next year). With Mona Washbourne, Finlay Currie, and Ethel Griffies. 98 min.
