The Bachelor and the Bobby-soxer
Sidney Sheldon (The Other Side of Midnight) won his Academy Award for the screenplay of this mildly perverse comedy (beating Chaplin for Monsieur Verdoux and Abraham Polonsky for Body and Soul). Shirley Temple is a teenager with a crush on Cary Grant, who is ordered to take her out by her elder sister, a judge (Myrna Loy). Grant seems stymied in this claustrophobic, essentially misogynistic material, and director Irving Reis isn't the man to pull him out. With Ray Collins and Rudy Vallee (1947). |
