The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Capsule by Dave Kehr
From the Chicago Reader

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were first paired as Holmes and Watson in Fox's 1939 Hound of the Baskervilles, and the stunning accuracy of the casting inspired this sequel, made the same year. The rest of the Holmes films were made (at Universal) in modern dress; the period work here is as fine as a major studio could provide. The direction, polished but impersonal, is by Alfred Werker. With George Zucco, Ida Lupino, and Alan Marshal.
